How to name your Shopify store (a simple, practical guide)
Your store name is the first thing customers see and the hardest thing to change later, so it's worth getting right. The good news: you don't need a stroke of genius. A good name comes from a simple process — brainstorm broadly, test against a few rules, check the domain, and commit. Here's how to do it without overthinking.
Start by generating lots of options
Don't wait for the perfect name to arrive — produce a big messy list first, then refine. The fastest way is to start with a keyword about what you sell and spin out variations. Our free store name generator does exactly this: enter a word like "coffee" or "fitness," pick a style, and get dozens of brandable ideas in seconds, each with an instant domain check. Use it to fill a shortlist, then apply the tests below.

The five tests of a good store name
- Easy to say and spell. If people mishear it or can't spell it after hearing it once, you'll lose word-of-mouth traffic. Say your shortlist out loud.
- Short and memorable. One or two words is ideal. Shorter names are easier to remember, type, and fit on a logo.
- Room to grow. Avoid boxing yourself in. A name tied to one product ("SilverRingsOnly") is hard to expand later; a broader name travels with you as your range grows.
- Distinctive in your niche. It shouldn't blend in with competitors or, worse, be easily confused with a bigger brand. A quick search tells you if it's crowded.
- Available as a .com. A matching .com builds trust and is easier for customers to find. Check before you fall in love with a name.
Check the domain before committing
This is the step people skip and regret. Before you settle on a name, confirm the .com is available (or a very close variation). In our generator, every suggestion has a "check .com" link that opens a domain search, so you can shortlist only names you can actually own. Avoid odd spellings or hyphens just to force a match — they hurt memorability.
Watch out for trademarks
A quick sanity check saves future pain: make sure your chosen name isn't an existing trademark in your category, and isn't so close to a known brand that it causes confusion. You don't need a lawyer for a basic check — a simple search goes a long way. Keeping "Shopify" or other platform names out of your brand is also wise.
Commit and move forward
Naming can become a procrastination trap. Once you have a name that passes the five tests and has an available domain, commit and keep building — the name matters far less than what you do with the store. A perfect name won't save a weak store, and a simple, clear name won't hold back a great one. Choose well, then move on to what really matters.
