Shopify theme vs template: what's the difference?
Shopify's design vocabulary trips up a lot of new store owners. "Theme" and "template" get used interchangeably, but they mean different things, and understanding the difference makes the whole theme editor suddenly make sense. Here's a plain-English breakdown, from biggest to smallest.
Theme: the whole design
A theme is the complete design package for your store — every page style, colour, font, and layout, bundled together. Dawn is a theme. Shrine PRO is a theme. When you "change your theme," you're swapping the entire look of your store at once. Think of the theme as the whole outfit: everything that determines how your store looks and feels comes inside it. It's the top-level container for all the smaller pieces below.

Template: the layout for one type of page
A template is more specific — it's the layout for a particular type of page within your theme. Your theme includes a product template (how product pages are laid out), a collection template (how category pages look), a blog template, a homepage template, and so on. Crucially, you can have more than one template for the same page type — for example, two different product templates, one for regular products and one for a special launch product. So the template controls the structure of a specific kind of page, while the theme is the whole design that contains all the templates.
The simple hierarchy
Here's the relationship, biggest to smallest:
- Theme — the entire store design (the whole outfit).
- Template — the layout for one page type, like product or collection pages.
- Section — a movable block within a template, like a hero banner, a featured-products row, or a testimonial block.
- Block — an item inside a section, like a single slide, button, or text field.
Each level nests inside the one above. A theme contains templates; a template is built from sections; a section holds blocks. Once you see it as nested layers, the theme editor stops feeling random.
Theme is the outfit, template is one garment, section is a pocket, block is a button. Same wardrobe, different scales.
Why the difference matters in practice
Understanding this saves real confusion. When you want to change how all your product pages look, you edit the product template — not the theme as a whole. When you want a special layout for one specific product, you create a second product template and assign it to that product. When you want to rearrange the homepage, you're moving sections within the homepage template. Knowing which level you're working at means you make changes in the right place instead of hunting around the editor.
A note on "template" as a marketing word
One source of confusion: outside Shopify's precise meaning, "template" is often used loosely to mean "a pre-made design you can buy" — basically a synonym for theme. So when a marketplace sells "Shopify templates," they usually mean themes. Inside the Shopify editor, though, template has the specific page-layout meaning above. Both usages exist; context tells you which one someone means.
The takeaway
A theme is your whole store design; a template is the layout for one type of page inside it; sections and blocks are the smaller pieces you rearrange within templates. Loosely, people sometimes call whole themes "templates" when they're for sale — but in the editor, the hierarchy above is what's really going on. Knowing it turns the theme customiser from a maze into a map.
