How many apps should a Shopify store have?

Too many apps slow your store and drain your budget. How many you really need — and how to decide.

Shopify's app store has thousands of options, and it's tempting to install anything that looks useful. But every app has a cost — in money, in page speed, and in complexity — so "how many apps should I have?" is a question worth answering deliberately. The honest answer isn't a magic number; it's a principle. Here it is, plus how to apply it.

There's no magic number — but there is a range

Most well-run stores use a modest handful of apps rather than dozens. The typical store runs only a few, and even high-performing brands usually land somewhere in the single digits to low teens — not thirty. If you're well into the twenties, that's usually a sign of accumulated cruft rather than genuine need. The goal isn't to hit a number; it's to run exactly the apps that earn their keep and no more.

Why more apps is not better

Each app you add carries real costs:

So every app needs to justify its cost against those downsides. "It might be handy" isn't justification; "it measurably helps me sell or saves me real time" is.

Audit your app stack

Scan your store to see every app actually loading.

The apps most stores genuinely need

Rather than a number, think in essential categories. Most selling stores benefit from: an email tool (to re-sell to past visitors), a reviews app (for trust and conversion), and often something for conversion (upsells or a page builder). Beyond those fundamentals, add only what your specific situation demands — a subscription app if you sell consumables, a translation app if you sell internationally, and so on. Start from the essentials and add deliberately, rather than installing broadly and hoping.

Don't ask "how many apps can I have?" Ask "does this specific app earn more than it costs me in money and speed?" Keep the ones that pass; cut the rest.

How to audit what you have

If your store feels app-heavy, do an audit. First, scan your own store to see exactly what's actually loading — you may find leftover code from apps you thought you removed. Then, for each app, ask: is it measurably helping me sell or saving me real time? If you can't answer yes, it's a candidate to remove. Be especially suspicious of apps you installed to "try" and never configured properly. Cutting dead-weight apps often speeds up the store and trims the monthly bill in one move.

Watch for removed-app leftovers

One technical trap worth knowing: uninstalling an app in Shopify doesn't always remove all the code it added to your theme. Over time, a store that's tried and dropped many apps can carry invisible leftover scripts that still slow it down. If your store is sluggish and you've churned through lots of apps, it's worth checking your theme for orphaned code — or having a developer do it. A scan showing apps you thought you'd removed is a clue this has happened.

The bottom line

There's no perfect app count, but the principle is simple: run the fewest apps that cover your genuine needs, because each one costs money and speed. Start from the essential categories — email, reviews, maybe conversion — add only what your situation truly requires, and periodically audit to cut the dead weight. A lean, deliberate stack beats a bloated one every time.
